Our client requested animation featuring a child character that could explain key concepts about children’s mental health that was distinct from competitors who favour vector-style animation. We created Emm, a gender-neutral child character designed to be relatable and expressive while maintaining child-like energy, ensuring a strong emotional connection with the audience. Emm’s design drew inspiration from classic stop-motion puppets.
We chose a theatrical setting for efficient scene changes which also allowed abstract representations of complex concepts. With nods to miniature set design, we approached the project as production and lighting designers would for a stage production. The multi-layered backdrop, inspired by classic children’s book illustrations like those of Mary Blair, included settings such as a park, school and giant sun. The use of painted flats, theatrical lighting to reflect Emm’s moods, and projected graphics enabled us to convey significant messaging and emotions within a short time frame.
