The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Australia’s regulator for heavy vehicles laws, are on a mission to make the roads safer for car and truck drivers.
Young drivers are overrepresented in crashes with heavy vehicles, and we needed to educate them on safer driving. Desensitised to shock tactics, we had to make young drivers realise how vulnerable they are on the roads.
So to make them rethink their fragility around trucks, we sculpted a car out of something soft and delicate: sand.
Crafted and installed at Bondi Beach over a busy weekend, the activation attracted thousands of people every day, as well as mentions and appearances on Channel 9’s Today Show, Pedestrian and Kiss FM.
A QR code drove people online for further education, as well as directing them to a survey for capturing data.
And most importantly, it captured attention – helping spread an important safety message.
