Seaworld’s newest wooden rollercoaster, Leviathan, boasts an all-encompassing pre-show experience.
The goal was to create a captivating 360° sonic journey for riders as they venture through the sea-monster’s cave and prepare to board the coaster. Mythological voices, celestial melodies and an underwater symphony of sound design, amplified through 25 effects speakers, 5 subwoofers and 11 ceiling speakers resulted in an earthquake-like reverberation in the Leviathan’s lair.
An unorthodox 41-speaker layout required a bespoke technical and creative approach. The soundscape, initially designed ’virtually’ using higher-order ambisonics, relied on binaural pre-mixes during the review process. It was later sub-mixed for each screen’s relative speakers, providing precise control over sound positioning throughout the cave.
What resulted was a truly three-dimensional world-class audio-visual experience, immersing riders in the ocean’s embrace, their fate precariously tied to the ebb and flow of the Leviahtan’s presence.
