The latest social science research shows that contrary to popular belief, most people are willing to change their minds, even about contentious issues – but only if they’re engaged in good-faith conversations. We were tasked to create an interactive online platform to help reframe difficult conversations as working toward a shared understanding, rather than trying to ‘win the argument’. The Rules of Civil Conversation website went immediately viral, hitting the front page of reddit, and was tweeted by global luminaries such as Stephen Fry and Steven Pinker. It is currently being used in school and university curricula around the world including Churchie and The University of Queensland here in Brisbane. Most importantly, it’s being used by people globally to have more empathetic and useful conversations that foster genuine understanding about volatile subjects, where previously such conversations would have polarised and driven us further apart.
